Getai Galore:
An experential role-play kit for children

2023

Creative Brief

Getai Galore is an experential role-play kit for children to learn more about Getai heritage in Singapore. Getai (歌台) or “song stage” in Chinese, originated during the Japanese Occupation at the New World Amusement Park. It became a popular form of mass entertainment in the 1950s with getai established at various amusement parks. To emulate the colorful and flamboyant nature of Getai aesthetics, I chose to focus on a saturated color palette and typefaces that featured strong curves and ornate details that echoed intricate Getai costumes and the curved tent-like stages of contemporary Getai.

The final kit features two aspects of role-play for children: a make-up kit featuring a pop-up mirror and a DIY puppet show, utilising the packaging as a Getai stage with paper puppets and stage decorations. The kit also includes two sets of educational flashcards, one detailing the history and importance of preserving Getai within contemporary Singapore and one featuring Getai-inspired makeup looks.

Getai Galore includes two make-up brushes, face paint palette, one set of false eyelashes,
two sets of educational flashcards, an envelope of paper stage props and outer cover.

The box itself serves as a stand for children to stage their own Getai puppet show using the provided stage props.

Educational flashcards detailing history and importance of Getai as well as Getai-inspired makeup tutorials.

The stage props include two sets of stages and puppets.

The temples are modelled after existing Chinese temples in Singapore, which were often backdrops for Teochew Opera performances often staged in traditional Getai performances. One set features die-cut details to increase tactility. The puppets were inspired by traditional Teochew Opera details as well as the flamboyant use of feathers and pom-poms from contemporary getai.
